Leave early from Guatemala City for the 1.5 hr. drive to the town
of San Vicente Pacaya, where we start walking. At this point it
is only a 2 hour walk to the summit. There are different trails
that go up. We normally take the route of the "Cerro Chino"
(Chinese Mound) which is more difficult and makes it more exciting
but the guide will consider the physical abilities of the participants
in the trip when deciding which trail to take.
This is a very active volcano, most of the time it is possible to
observe the lava boiling in the crater; sometimes the volcano is
throwing lava and ashes. On some occasions we may see a river of
lava flowing out.
